Overview Details Paragraph 139 Zero Carbon Home South Lincolnshire A zero-carbon home set in the heart of the South Lincolnshire countryside, this five-bedroom self-build is carefully designed to be both sympathetic to its rural setting and highly responsive to environmental performance. The layout enables passive thermal strategies that mitigate overheating while maximising natural light, ventilation, and seasonal comfort. The house seamlessly merges indoors and outdoors through a central courtyard that is accessible from every room. This arrangement allows the private, domesticated garden to remain completely concealed from the surrounding landscape, while giving occupants a continuous visual and physical connection to the outdoors wherever they are in the home. The floor plan divides the dwelling into three distinct barn forms, linked by corten steel corridors topped with sedum roofs. This fragmented massing reduces visual impact within the landscape and reinforces the agricultural character of the site. The material palette is directly informed by the surrounding farm buildings, grounding the home firmly within its context. The principal barn accommodates open-plan living spaces, complemented by a separate snug, study, and playroom. To the south, a second barn houses five bedrooms, each with its own en-suite, providing privacy and quiet retreat. The northern barn is designed as a traditional hit-and-miss timber structure, incorporating a carport and storage.Together, the composition delivers a contemporary rural dwelling that balances privacy and openness, environmental performance and comfort, and modern living with agricultural heritage.
